I’ve been having panic attacks for about a year now. I also usually have like a lump in my throat feeling and nausea. I saw a doctor a few months ago and she prescribed me some Lorazepam. The med did not work very well, and I still have panic attacks.
I have panic attacks because I start thinking of getting them or getting nauseous. So in a way, I have developed a fear; I’m pretty sure I must have Panic Disorder.

How can I get rid of anxiety and my panic attacks?

Hi. I have been suffering from panic disorder for almost a year. It is work related. I was bullied at work and as a result I got moved to another area. But its not the job for me and I cant cope anymore. I have started to look for another job.
Im ok until the day before Im back at work and then try not to think about it. But it is always at the back of my mind. I have panic attacks, usually when Im on my own, but my husband saw me for the first time having a really bad one last week. I feel so low and guilty, because I think my anxiety is too much for my husband. He shouldnt have to see me like this. I hate being on my own now, especially at night. And I cant sleep the night before Im working. Once Im there Im exausted and constantly worry away to myself. I have even thought about taking a heap of pills or cuttting myself – just so I dont have to go to work. But I wouldnt manage to do either of things cos I know that that would make everything worse. Im seeing a councillor.
Im not on any meds for it, I didnt want any fom my GP. But that was earlier in the year, and things did get better, but Im getting bad again and the very thought of going into work tomorrow makes me feel ill! But I cant take sick time anymore as I have been off alot this past year, and that also makes me worry. That Im going to loose my job if Im ever not well.

How do I stop Panic Attacks before they start?

I get frequent panic attacks after my "run in" with a heart problem I had a year ago. Panic attacks for me comes in waves and does not leave me for 3 – 4 days. It makes me feel very scared and depressed and I am edgy all the time. I keep feeling pain sensations in my chest, back and arm and can’t get over the feeling – that I am going to die or get a heart attack.
I did go to the doctor and my heart specialist. They can’t find anything unusual in my heart …they have given me some medications for this panic disorder – xanax – but that freaks me out and the withdrawal symptoms are awful. Thanks

Getting over a fear of public speaking

I absolutely love public speaking, i really do, and I have absolutely no problem having group discussions, debates, etc. However, things sort of change when I actually get up in front of a group of people. It’s not necessarily that I’m nervous… it’s just that one time while I was giving a presentation, I was in the middle of a panic attack (due to a now-controlled panic disorder, not in any way related to public speaking) and I was sort of breathing a little fast. Obviously, given that I was in the middle of a panic attack, I couldn’t just take some deep breaths and calm down right away. Now, though, I tend to breathe a little fast when I present, and I’m really not sure why (maybe I’m just associating that past event with every presentation I do?) but does anyone have any tips as to how to get over that? Like I said, I’m not nervous in groups or anything. I’m going for poli sci in college so I know I’ll need to present a lot. Thanks

Anxiety Disorders: 5 Common Types

Panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia and social anxiety disorder are just some of the different types of anxiety disorders that affect millions of adult Americans every year. Anxiety disorder and anxiety problems are more common in women than in men, and are identified by extreme feelings of panic, worry, or a preoccupation with negative events that could occur in the person’s life.

According to WebMD.com, an anxiety disorder “is a serious mental illness. People suffering from it often show excessive fear, worry, or irrational behavior in response to everyday situations. Recognizing the different types of anxiety disorder can help the person cope better with the effect and the situation that may be causing the problem. Here’s a close look at the different types of anxiety disorders:

1. Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). A person with OCD experiences involuntary intrusive thoughts and is frightened that something bad will happen. The person then will be compelled to do time-consuming routines to reduce the feeling of dread. The person typically designs their own routine to help reduce a certain type of fear. For example, someone who fears germs and disease may constantly wash their hands. Someone who fears that things will be out of control may constantly arrange and rearrange furniture or objects in the home.

2. Social anxiety disorder. eople who excessively worry what others may think about them may suffer from this disorder. They are afraid of being judged, rejected, or shamed by others and so they refrain from attending social activities.

3. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). This type of anxiety disorder is the most common among adult men and women in the United States, and consists of constant worry, angst or tension about situations that may not be in proportion with the actual circumstance or event. This can turn into a problem when it interferes with relationships, work or the person’s emotional health.

4. PTSD or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. This disorder normally surfaces after a person has experienced a traumatic event. The person may have nightmares or recurrent memories about the event, and can have difficult functioning in everyday life. In some cases, mildly stressful situations can trigger extreme anxiety, fear or anger, because the person is reliving the traumatic experience and reacting to it in the present time.

5. Agoraphobia and other phobias related to anxiety. Agoraphobia is an intense fear of having a panic attack in a public situation that could cause severe embarrassment. Other phobias related to anxiety disorders are often experienced by those who have been diagnosed with panic disorder and other disorders, and are rooted in feelings of being ashamed or judged about their problem.  The “anxiety about anxiety” is a hallmark trait of these types of phobias. Another common anxiety problem that falls in this category is the fear of driving.

These are just some of the most common anxiety and panic disorders afflicting people all over the globe. People who have undergone a traumatic incidence, have a difficulty dealing with stress, and those with a family history of anxiety issues are more prone to these disorders. It is important to identify what type of anxiety disorder a person is experiencing before creating an effective treatment plan for the problem.
